An ode to Jim Hughes W6FHZ  Nov 6 1923

I have known Jim for 37 years.  He kept me laughing that whole time as well as being a ham, he was also my friend.  Jim is a World War II Vet.  He got out of the military after the war and went to work in Chicago.  But he has been robbed and had guns pointed at him, so he said he might as well go back into the US Air Force.  He retired in 1965.  Went to work for Lockheed the following Monday for 20 years.

He lived in San Jose, California where he and his wife Sue, who was a realtor.  They moved to Reno, Nevada.  In 1985 he worked part time at Reno Radio.  Then became the manager until they closed in about 2001.  I did repair and mods for him while at Reno Radio.  These were our drinking days….and we did a lot!  He was the kind of guy the more he drank the more he had a good time.  Always had a good attitude.

Jim had a Yaesu FT 1000D with 1kw amp and 3 el 40 meter beam at 40 feet.  He was net control of the Noontime Net for many years.  He always had a big signal in Yuma, Az (where I live).  I have forgotten many details of many things most were very funny.  Jim is a very good friend and just a great person.  Whenever I checked in the net, he always called me “ole goat”.  This became normal for both of us.  His wife Sue was a “class act”.
